Diocesan Racial Justice and Reconciliation Commission Gathers for Retreat

The diocesan Racial Justice and Reconciliation Commission conducted an annual retreat at St. Christopher Camp and Conference Center on September 11 and 12. During the meeting, each subcommittee within the commission talked about their primary focuses, providing a detailed report of recent activities and future opportunities. These subcommittees are responsible for overseeing offerings and opportunities for education (such as Sacred Ground), training (including the Absalom Jones Center’s One Day Racial Healing Pilgrimage Program), historical presentations during Diocesan Learning Days of Black Churches and Institutions, and justice initiatives (such as advocacy opportunities for immigration). During the retreat, Bishop Ruth Woodliff-Stanley commended the outstanding efforts of the commission, emphasizing the progress made in advancing justice.
The members also highlighted notable successes, including excellent enrollment in Sacred Ground currently offered via Zoom, participation by more than 50 members of the diocese in the Absalom Jones Center for Racial Healing Pilgrimage, and the well-received learning days that have been held to date (with the next learning day scheduled for October 3 at Voorhees University). Significant discussion was dedicated to the remarkable work of the Three United Churches in Summerville—namely Epiphany, Good Shepherd, and St. George’s—in Latino ministry and immigration advocacy. The next steps involve continued support for these programs at the deanery level and coordination with deaneries, deans, and other channels within the diocese.
The group left feeling energized for the work ahead!
