‘Three Churches United’ Gather to Honor Juneteenth and Remember the Emanuel Nine

The “Three Churches United” congregations of St. Stephen’s, St. Mark’s and Calvary Episcopal Churches in Charleston worshiped together at St. Stephen’s on Sunday, June 22, celebrating Juneteenth and honoring the Emanuel Nine, who lost their lives in a senseless act of violence at Mother Emanuel AME Church 10 years ago. The service was attended by more than 230 people from across the diocese and the community.
The Rev. Adam Shoemaker, rector of St. Stephen’s, presided at the service and The Rev. Ricardo Bailey, rector of Calvary, gave a rousing sermon, imploring those in attendance not be afraid and to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with God. The Very Rev. Michael Shaffer, rector of St. Mark’s, reminded everyone that the work of the “Three Churches United” is leading the way pursuant to our diocesan mission statement: “Through the liberating Gospel of Jesus, we are seeking justice, spreading Christ’s love, and walking humbly with our God.”
Following the service, those who have participated in racial justice pilgrimages to Atlanta, Montgomery and Selma over the last several years, shared their experiences with others during a time of fellowship in the parish hall. Preliminary plans are underway for a 2026 pilgrimage to Washington, D.C. The next “Three Churches United” service will be at St. Mark’s on Sunday, November 23 (Christ the King Sunday). Bishop Ruth Woodliff-Stanley will celebrate and the Rt. Rev. Michael Curry, 27th presiding bishop and primate of The Episcopal Church, will serve as preacher. Mark your calendars!
