The Rt. Rev. Ann Ritonia Visits Citadel Episcopal Cadet Fellowship

Bishop Ann Ritonia Speaks to The Citadel Episcopal Cadet Fellowship

On Monday, April 20, the Citadel’s Episcopal Cadet Fellowship welcomed the Rt. Rev. Ann Ritonia who serves as The Episcopal Church’s suffragan bishop for the Armed Forces and Federal Ministries. In this role, Bishop Ann supports all Episcopal clergy serving as military chaplains and in the federal agencies such as the Veteran’s Administration and Department of Homeland Security. During her visit, Bishop Ann spent time during the day with several cadets who are considering serving as a military chaplain after graduation.

That evening—after a wonderful meal prepared by friends from Edisto Island, Billy and Emily Cox and Bill and Barb Houston (thank you!)—she gave a very informative and timely presentation on The Episcopal Church’s position on the Just War tradition which dates back to the 4th Century and St. Augustine. She emphasized that these are not just ethical issues for members of the Armed Forces to consider, but also for those who serve in positions of authority in other areas, such as law enforcement and immigration, who are responsible for the treatment of others. At the end of her remarks, the bishop presented the Rev. Rob Donehue with a certificate of appreciation to The Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina for their support of the Episcopal Cadet Fellowship. It was a great evening!

At the 74th General Convention in 2003, The Episcopal Church encouraged all of its members “to study, understand and utilize the Just War tradition developed over the centuries.” Given the circumstances in which we find ourselves today, it is even more important for Episcopalians to understand how our Christian values should be applied during periods of armed conflict. If you are interested in learning more, Bishop Ritonia’s website is a great place to start!
