Sacred Ground Session Concludes at Calvary, Charleston

Participants and leaders of the diocesan session of Sacred Ground at the historic Calvary Episcopal Church in Charleston

Participants in the latest diocesan-wide offering of Sacred Ground, concluded the session with an in-person event at the Historic Calvary Episcopal Church in Charleston on Saturday, February 28. The session was facilitated by members of the diocesan Racial Justice and Reconciliation Commission. Sacred Ground is a program sponsored by The Episcopal Church that promotes racial reconciliation via a series of readings, videos and honest discussions regarding race.

As part of the session-concluding event, the commission was honored to welcome guest presenters, Dr. J. Herman Blake and his wife, Dr. Emily Moore. They have both had distinguished academic careers and Dr. Blake has done extensive research regarding the Gullah-Geechee culture. In addition, Dr. Blake knew well and was a mentee of noted theologian, Howard Thurman (author of one of the Sacred Ground readings, Jesus and the Disinherited.)  Drs. Blake and Moore shared their personal experiences with Dr. Thurman and how he impacted their lives.  The program ended with a service of Holy Eucharist. Bishop Ruth Woodliff-Stanley served as celebrant and a number of participants shared reflections of their Sacred Ground experiences.
